Description
SS-31 — Research Overview
SS-31, also known in scientific literature as elamipretide, is a synthetic mitochondria-targeting tetrapeptide studied for its interaction with cardiolipin, a phospholipid concentrated within the inner mitochondrial membrane.
Research has investigated how this interaction may influence the structure and function of mitochondria. In experimental models, SS-31 has been studied in relation to mitochondrial membrane organisation, cristae structure, electron transport, oxidative phosphorylation, cellular ATP production and oxidative-stress pathways.
Its interaction with cardiolipin is of particular scientific interest because cardiolipin plays an important role in maintaining the organisation of proteins involved in mitochondrial energy metabolism. Laboratory and clinical research continues to investigate how SS-31 affects mitochondrial bioenergetics under different experimental and disease conditions.
Research areas associated with SS-31 include: mitochondrial membrane biology; cardiolipin interactions; mitochondrial bioenergetics; electron-transport activity; ATP-production pathways; cristae structure; and cellular oxidative-stress signalling.
